What is TripPlanr?

TripPlanr is the smart tool to help you plan your trips.

TripPlanr filters through all the travel websites out there (while taking out the junk you don’t need for your trip) and makes recommendations based on 3 magic things:

• Preferences: do you like chocolate or Guinness? (or both like me)
• Constraints: do you have a car or a bike? or is it raining?
• Social Network: what did Joe (who has similar preferences and constraints to me) do in Ibiza?

For example, you’re planning a trip to Ireland. TripPlanr has learned some stuff about you - you like ice hockey, historical sites and nightlife. You might be renting a car for three days and want to take it easy for the rest of the week. TripPlanr will scan the web to suggest a trip and events that match your own interests. TripPlanr may, for example, suggest a base in Kilkenny, hurling matches and a visit to Cashel. You still run the show and control your trip, but all the essential information you need is filtered and stored for you.

Your flight is to JFK airport, your business meetings are in New Jersey but you want to go sightseeing in New York and your hotel must be near a diabetic-friendly restaurant. Planning a business trip can be stressful at the best of times but doing it all through the web can be an eye-opening experience, says Tim Berners-Lee, as he explains how his invention, the world wide web, has its limitations and why he has spent the past decade working on its upgrade: the semantic web. “To make a detailed travel decision or similar, you need to see all that information on the same map. Currently, you have to print out all the data, sort through it and then stand back and see if you can make the connections yourself. “With a semantic website you could pull all these information forms together instantly and put them on the same map.”

Q. How does a small West of Ireland start up build the smart app people are waiting for?

A. By partnering with the largest semantic Web research institute in the world.

In DERI over 130 people from as nearly as many countries are working on "enabling networked knowledge". There is a great buzz in this centre and weʼre so lucky to partner with these guys.

I recommend that major organizations that want to really see the potential of the Semantic Web, consider a relationship with DERI - They are clearly the leader in that space.
